Turin DF64 Gen 2: Precision Single-Dose Grinder

If you are searching for a single dose espresso grinder that delivers precision, consistency, and minimal waste, the Turin DF64 Gen 2 Coffee Grinder is engineered exactly for that purpose. This stepless coffee grinder combines 64mm flat burrs with a low retention design to give home baristas complete control over every extraction.

Unlike hopper-style grinders that leave stale grounds sitting in the chamber, the DF64 Gen 2 is built as a true low retention coffee grinder. You grind only what you need, when you need it. The result is fresher coffee, less waste, and more flavor in every cup. At a competitive price point, it delivers performance that rivals grinders costing nearly twice as much.

With its compact footprint of just 10 inches long by 5.2 inches wide by 12 inches high, it fits comfortably under standard kitchen cabinets and weighs only 15 pounds. It is small enough for apartment kitchens yet capable enough for serious home cafe setups.

What Is the DF64 Gen 2 Grinder?

The DF64 Gen 2 Coffee Grinder (also known as DF64 II or v2) is a single-dose, stepless flat burr grinder designed for precision grinding across multiple brew methods. Unlike traditional hopper grinders, it’s built to grind only what you need, reducing stale grounds and improving flavor clarity.

It features 64mm stainless steel flat burrs, a 250W motor, and a redesigned low-retention system that includes a plasma generator and anti-popcorn device. The result is cleaner grinding, minimal waste, and better consistency in every cup.

This burr grinder sits in the sweet spot between entry-level and prosumer grinder, offering serious performance at a relatively accessible price point. It is one of the best espresso grinder under $500 for home baristas who want single dose precision without compromise.

Brew Methods Supported

  • Espresso and Ristretto: Fine, uniform particles for proper puck resistance and syrupy shots.
  • Pour-Over and V60: Medium grind that highlights clarity and bright notes.
  • French Press and Cold Brew: Full coarse range for immersion brewing.

Key Features

Stepless Grind Adjustment (Infinite Settings)

No preset steps. Dial in exactly the grind you need for any bean or brew method. Reference marks for espresso, pour-over, and coarse settings are included as starting points.

64mm Flat Burrs (DFC-Coated as Standard)

The Gen 2 ships with custom DFC-coated burrs that perform similarly to SSP High Uniformity burrs. When you are ready to experiment, the grinder accepts any 64mm flat burr set including SSP, DLC, and Mazzer.

Single Dose Workflow with 50g Bellow Hopper

Weigh your beans, grind, then push the bellows to clear the chamber. No stale grounds left behind. Fresh coffee every time.

Low Retention Design

A plasma generator neutralizes static at the chute. An anti-popcorn device keeps beans feeding evenly. The result is clean, clump-free grounds with almost no waste.

Turin DF64 Gen 2 vs Competitors

DF64 Gen 2 vs Niche Zero

The Niche Zero is the most frequently compared single dose grinder on the market. The key difference is burr type. The DF64 Gen 2 uses 64mm flat burrs while the Niche Zero uses 63mm conical burrs. Flat burrs tend to produce more clarity and separation in the cup, highlighting individual tasting notes. Conical burrs often yield more body and a traditional, rounded espresso profile.

The DF64 Gen 2 is typically 150 to 200 dollars less expensive and offers a far broader upgrade path with SSP, DLC, and Mazzer burr compatibility. The Niche Zero features a more polished industrial design and slightly lower retention out of the box.

Choose the DF64 Gen 2 if you value flat burr clarity, extensive customization, and better value. Choose the Niche Zero if you prefer conical burr body and are willing to pay a premium for aesthetics.

DF64 Gen 2 vs Fellow Opus

The Fellow Opus is a budget-friendly grinder aimed at brewed coffee enthusiasts. It uses 40mm conical burrs and a stepped adjustment system. While it can grind for espresso, it lacks the precision and consistency needed for serious espresso work.

The DF64 Gen 2 is in a completely different league for espresso performance. The 64mm flat burrs, stepless adjustment, and low retention design make it a true espresso grinder, while still handling pour-over and cold brew with ease. The Opus is a solid entry-level choice for filter coffee drinkers, but the DF64 V2 is the clear upgrade for anyone serious about espresso.

Who Should Buy this Home Grinder

Buy the Turin DF64 Gen 2 if:
  • You want a single dose grinder that keeps every cup fresh
  • You brew espresso and want micro-adjustment control
  • You switch between brew methods and need one grinder that handles all of them
  • You plan to upgrade burrs later as your taste develops
  • You want flat burr clarity without paying Niche Zero prices
Consider alternatives if:
  • You need a silent grinder for early morning use (over 90 dB)
  • You want one-touch automation with no learning curve
  • You only brew filter coffee and do not need espresso precision
  • Counter space is extremely limited

FAQ

  1. Is it good for espresso?

Yes. Stepless adjustment and 64mm flat burrs give precise, uniform espresso extraction.

  2. How do I reduce static?

Plasma generator handles most. Add one water drop to beans (RDT) in dry climates.

  3. What burrs fit?

Any 64mm flat set. Stock DFC burrs are excellent. Upgrade to SSP, DLC, or Mazzer.

    No. Gen 2 is a 2023 redesign. V4/V5 are older first-generation models.

  5. How loud is it?

Over 90 dB. Loud but fast. Consider DF64V with brushless motor for silence.

  6. Can it grind pour-over and cold brew? Yes. Stepless dial covers full range from espresso-fine to cold brew-coarse.
  7. Do I need to upgrade burrs immediately? No. Stock DFC burrs perform like premium SSP. Upgrade when your palate demands it.

Yes. 12 inches tall. Fits standard cabinets with small footprint.

  9. Does it work with any espresso machine?

Yes. 58mm dosing cup and collar fit standard portafilters. Universal compatibility.

Bought a budget grinder (fellow opus) originally, lots of retention, and frustrating moments. Upgraded to the 64 and after the first few grinds, instantly better and worth the dosh. Buy it nice or buy it twice. I wish i bought the 64 first saved the time and energy <3

I’ve had my grinder for almost a month. I was going to buy a DF53 but it was unavailable so I splurged on the DF64. It is much quieter than I thought it would be with very little retention. I’m still experimenting with grinds as I make coffee with an aeropress. This is a great grinder.

Being a beginner of espresso making the DF 64 grinder is very good. The first month of grinding, a bit messy around the shut but after a couple times of cleaning it looks clean. I am very pleased with this brand. My coffee now is very good and enjoyable and I am glad that I purchased that piece of equipment.
