Turin DF54 Grinder: Single-Dose Espresso Grinding

The Turin DF54 Grinder is a compact single-dose grinder with 54mm flat steel burrs and under 0.1 gram retention. At $234, it offers a workflow similar to premium single-dose grinders for a fraction of the price.

Built for home baristas who weigh beans before every brew, it grinds only what you need and blows out residual grounds with an included bellows. The stepless adjustment dial gives you infinite control from espresso-fine to pour-over without preset clicks limiting your options.

What Is the Turin DF54 Grinder

The DF54 centers on 54mm stainless steel flat burrs. These produce uniform particle sizes that help with even extraction and balanced flavor. The burrs are smaller than the 55-64mm sets in pricier grinders but larger than the 40mm conical burrs common in entry-level machines.

The stepless adjustment uses a chrome-wrapped dial with a visible metal indicator. You turn it while running to avoid jamming and lock in anywhere between espresso and coarse brew settings. No steps or presets, just whatever your beans and method need.

As a single-dose grinder, you drop your weighed beans into the 20 gram hopper and grind straight through. The included bellows expands capacity to 50 grams and clears out any leftover grounds after. Retention stays under 0.1 grams, so your next dose is not contaminated by stale coffee from yesterday.

An anti-popcorn device sits above the burrs to stop beans from bouncing around during grinding. This keeps feeding consistent and speeds up the workflow. The 150W motor runs stable without overheating beans, and the aluminum body with powder coating keeps the footprint small and the look clean.

You get a 58mm food-grade plastic dosing cup that pairs with most standard portafilters. Grind into the cup or straight into your portafilter using the dosing collar.

Turin DF54 Grinder vs Similar Options

Turin DF54 vs Turin DF64 Gen 2

The DF64 Gen 2 uses 64mm flat burrs and costs roughly $100 more. It grinds faster and produces slightly better particle distribution. The DF54 is more compact and budget-friendly.

Choose the DF64 if you want larger burrs and faster grinding. Choose the DF54 grinder if budget and counter space matter more.

Turin DF54 vs Eureka Mignon Zero

The Mignon Zero uses 55mm flat burrs and costs $499. It has Italian build quality and proven reliability. The bellows system is more refined.

Choose the Zero if you want established brand support and quieter operation. Choose the Turin DF54 grinder if you want similar single-dose workflow at $200 less.

Turin DF54 vs Baratza Encore ESP

The Encore ESP uses 40mm conical burrs and costs around $185. It handles both espresso and filter coffee but uses a traditional hopper, not single-dose. It is louder and retention is higher.

Choose the Encore ESP if you want one grinder for espresso and drip with a lower price. Choose the DF54 if you want single-dose freshness, lower retention, and quieter grinding.

Who Should Buy the DF54 Grinder

Buy this grinder if:
  • You want single-dose workflow under $300
  • Low retention matters more than hopper capacity
  • You are upgrading from a hand grinder or basic electric
  • Compact size fits your kitchen
  • You want to experiment with espresso and manual brews
Consider alternatives if:
  • Budget is under $200 (look at hand grinders)
  • You need proven long-term reliability (look at Eureka)
  • You want larger burrs for faster grinding (look at DF64 gen 2)
  • You need true commercial volume

FAQ

  1. Is it good for beginners?
Yes. Simple controls and single-dose workflow teach good habits. Stepless adjustment takes practice.
  2. Can the DF54 grind for espresso?
Yes. The stepless adjustment goes fine enough for espresso and the 54mm flat burrs produce consistent shots.
  3. How loud is it?
Moderate. Not as quiet as insulated grinders like the Eureka Mignon Notte, but acceptable for home use.
  4. Does it work for pour-over?
Yes. The grind range covers pour-over and cold brew, though flat burrs at this size favor espresso clarity over filter sweetness.
  5. How much retention does it really have?
Under 0.1 grams per dose with the bellows. Without the bellows you may see slightly more.
  6. Is the dosing cup necessary?
No. You can grind directly into a portafilter with the included collar. The cup is convenient for weighing and transferring.

The Turin DF54 Grinder is a budget entry into single-dose grinding that does not sacrifice core performance. It gives you flat burrs, stepless control, and near-zero retention at a price that undercuts most competitors by half or more.

The tradeoffs are real. The hopper is small, the build is basic, and the workflow is not as polished as premium options. But if you want to stop wasting stale hopper coffee and start dialing in fresh doses without spending $500-plus, the DF54 delivers genuine value.

I may be a layman, but my espresso pulls perfectly. Very fine adjustment on this grinder is top notch. Couldn’t be happier with my purchase

I was using a breville conical burr grinder for years, and it was great. This grinder was a huge upgrade! Definitely great for the espresso or pour over enthusiast. If you do larger pots of coffee, you may have a hard time grinding enough coffee at once, since the capacity is relatively small in the grinder.

I got breville bambino plus, and all my friends told me the grinder was the most important part so I splurged on the DF 54. As a newbie, it has been easy to use, understandable adjustments, and I am really fond of it. It’s not too loud and does an excellent job. I am hoping I can have it for a long time.

Grinder works great. Built like a tank. Delivers consistent expresso powder for my gaggia. Arrived well packaged and on time.
