Fellow Ode Gen 2: 64mm Filter Coffee Grinder

The Fellow Ode Gen 2 is a single-dose filter coffee grinder designed for home manual brewing, manufactured in China by Fellow Industries, a San Francisco-based company known for modern coffee equipment. Sitting in the premium home grinder category between entry-level hand grinders and commercial units, it delivers professional-grade 64mm flat burrs and precision features for pour-over, drip, French press, and cold brew at a mid-premium price point.

At $345, it competes with the Baratza Encore ESP and Eureka Mignon Notte, offering larger burrs and advanced motor control for home brewers who want cafe-quality consistency without countertop clutter or complexity.

What’s Included

  • The unit itself
  • 100 gram hopper with lid
  • Magnetic catch cup with pour fins
  • Grinds knocker
  • Power cord
  • User manual

What is Fellow Ode Gen 2

The Fellow Ode Gen 2 is built for manual brewing only, not espresso. Fellow made it for people who want serious grind quality at home without the bulk or noise of a shop grinder.

The 64mm flat stainless steel burrs are made in-house and way bigger than the 40mm ones in most home grinders. That means faster grinding and more even particles, which gives you cleaner and more balanced flavor in your cup.

The motor has PID control so it does not slow down as it chews through beans. Without that you get uneven sizes and weird extraction. Here your morning routine stays consistent.

You weigh your beans, dump them in the 100 gram hopper, and grind what you need. No old beans sitting around getting stale. The magnetic catch cup snaps in tight and pours clean.

Static sucks with most electric grinders. This one has an ionizer that cuts down the cling, plus a little knocker that bangs out leftover grounds when you are done. Way less mess on your counter.

Quiet enough for early mornings or roommates. It also auto-stops when the beans are gone so you do not have to stand there watching it.

You get 31 grind steps with 11 main settings and micro tweaks between. Covers coarse French press up to medium pour-over starting around 250 microns. No espresso range though.

The Gen 2 fixes what the original lacked with redesigned burrs, better static control, and wider range. People coming from Gen 1 say the flavor is cleaner and cleanup is way easier.

Key Features

64mm Flat Stainless Steel Burrs

Larger than standard home grinder burrs for faster grinding and more uniform particle size, delivering cleaner and more balanced flavor in every cup.

In-House Engineered Burrs

Designed and manufactured by Fellow specifically for this grinder, optimized for filter coffee rather than adapted from generic burr sets.

PID-Controlled Motor

Maintains stable RPM throughout the grind to prevent speed drops that cause uneven extraction, giving you consistent results every morning.

Single-Dose 100g Hopper

Grind only what you weigh out, no stale beans sitting around. Holds enough for one to three cups depending on your brew method.

Magnetic Catch Cup

Snaps securely into place and pours neatly into your brewer, reducing spills and making the workflow smooth and intuitive.

Ionizer Anti-Static Technology

Neutralizes static cling so grounds do not fly everywhere, keeping your counter clean and reducing wasted coffee after each grind.

Integrated Grounds Knocker

Taps out retained grounds after grinding so you get everything you weighed in and leave less mess behind inside the machine.

31-Step Grind Adjustment

Eleven macro settings with micro tweaks between them, covering coarse French press through medium pour-over with precise control.

Auto-Stop Function

Detects when beans are finished and shuts the motor off automatically, so you do not have to babysit the grinder each time.

Quiet Operation

Runs significantly quieter than most electric grinders, making it ideal for early mornings or shared living spaces.

Filter Coffee Optimized

Tuned specifically for pour-over, drip, French press, and cold brew with grind range starting around 250 microns and going coarser.

Comparison with Similar Grinders

Gen 2 vs Gen 1

Both use single-dose workflow and compact design. The Gen 2 upgrades the burrs to 64mm Gen 2 Brew Burrs with wider range and better consistency. Anti-static performance improved significantly. The grind range expanded for more precise filter dialing.

Choose the Gen 2 if you want the latest burr design, less static, and cleaner flavor. Choose the Gen 1 only if found at significant discount and you accept the limitations.

Fellow Ode Gen 2 vs Baratza Encore ESP

The Baratza Encore ESP costs around $200 and handles both filter and entry-level espresso. It uses 40mm conical burrs and has more retention. The build is lighter and less refined.

The Ode Gen 2 uses larger 64mm flat burrs optimized for filter. It has lower retention, better anti-static, and quieter operation. It costs more but delivers superior filter coffee.

Choose the Encore ESP if you want one grinder for both filter and occasional espresso on a budget. Choose the Ode Gen 2 if you only drink filter coffee and want premium grind quality.

FAQ

  1. What is the difference between Gen 2 and original Ode?
Gen 2 has upgraded 64mm burrs, improved anti-static, wider grind range, and better consistency.
  2. Is it good for espresso?
No. It is designed for filter coffee only. It does not grind fine enough for espresso.
  3. Is it a single dose grinder?
Yes. Grind only what you need per brew. The 100 gram hopper supports this workflow.
  4. How consistent is the grind?
Very consistent. The 64mm flat burrs and PID motor produce uniform particles for filter methods.
  5. Does it make a mess?
No. The ionizer reduces static. The knocker clears retained grounds. Counter stays clean.
  6. Is it noisy?
No. It is designed for quiet home use. Suitable for early mornings.
  7. Can beginners use it?
Yes. Simple stepped controls and auto-stop make it easy for all skill levels.
  8. How much can it grind at once?
100 grams. Enough for one to three cups depending on dose size.
  9. Does it retain grounds?
Very little. Vertical burr alignment and knocker minimize retention to under one gram.
  10. Is Gen 2 worth upgrading from Gen 1?
Yes if you want better consistency and less static. The burr upgrade is noticeable.

The Fellow Ode Gen 2 fills a real gap in the home grinder market. It gives you professional-grade 64mm flat burrs and a stable PID-controlled motor without the bulk, noise, or price tag of a commercial unit. The single-dose workflow keeps your coffee fresh, the anti-static system actually works, and the compact design looks good on any counter.

Not everyone needs this level of grinder. If you are happy with pre-ground coffee or a basic blade grinder, the Ode Gen 2 is probably overkill. But if you weigh your beans, dial in your grind, and care about what is in your cup, the difference is immediate and worth every penny.
